Young Spanish Central Defender Mikel San Jose was officially unveiled to
the public as a Chesterfield player this morning after a torrid battle with
fellow Division three rivals Birmingham City vie for the Spaniard’s signature.
The Spireites broke their own club record which saw veteran Taras Mykhalyk and
young Danish fullback Jonas Knudsen move in the opposite direction, the deal
accumulated to $11.7 million breaking their previous record signing held by
Michael Ballack for $7.8 million.
The signing of the much coveted Spanish defender San Jose represented
quite a coup for the little Yorkshire side with as many as seventeen clubs
monitoring San Jose with the likes of Fulham, Nottingham Forest and Portsmouth
interested but only Chesterfield and Birmingham registering an official
interest.
Manager Glory Days couldn’t hide his delight in securing the former
Aston Villa star and was open in his admiration of the young man
“I’m happy to admit that we got our top transfer target, he has great
positional sense, good heading ability for his size and a strong tackler. His
leadership on and off the field will be another attribute we will utilise here
in Chesterfield”
“I have been a great admirer of his talents since I arrived as the manager
of Chesterfield. When he was playing at Aston Villa, we tried to get Mikel (San
Jose) unfortunately we couldn’t come to an agreement, so I’m glad we made it
work this time around with Racing”
San Jose will have big shoes to fill with the departure of former
captain Taras Mykhalyk in the opposite direction to Racing. Fan favourite and former captain Mykhalyk had
played 115 games for Chesterfield and is known for his uncompromising style and
was a key part of Chesterfield’s impressive promotion in season 7, not missing
a single regular season game.
“We would like to wish Taras and Jonas the best of luck in Spain and
thank both of them for an invaluable contribution to Chesterfield. Taras
(Mykhaylk) has been a marvellous leader for our side and he is a great example
for any young footballer”
