Thompson wants to tighten up

Thompson wants to tighten up

Division 3 promotion chasers Barnsley climbed back into the play off places tonight after a thrilling encounter at the Amex stadium against Brighton ended in a 4-4 draw. The point against the league leaders sees them move into 6th position on 51 points but with the division so tight it looks as though the chase could go all the way to the end of the season.

Barnsley took the lead on 8 minutes through top scorer López LISANDRO but the lead lasted just 12 minutes with Carlos BACCA levelling for the host to make it 1-1. The game was proving to be an open affair and Barnsley regained the lead with 23 minutes on the clock courtesy of Portuguese winger Adelino VIEIRINHA 1-2.
Brighton were finding the going tough against the Tykes and they found themselves 1-3 down on 34 minutes Marko ARNAUTOVIC the scorer this time. The Amex stadium was stunned and just 3 minutes later it got worse when Vladimir BYSTROV headed home past Ben Foster to make the scoreline 1-4.
The boos were ringing out around the stadium but with 40 minutes on the clock the fans thought their team had pulled it back when Carlos BACCA fired home but the goal was ruled out with the assistant flagging for offside.

Brighton started the 2nd half on the front foot after a severe half time ticking off and whatever said worked as on 49 minutes they pulled the game back to 2-4 Carlos BACCA again the scorer with a fine looping header past Ochoa. The host now had their tails up and just 3 minutes later it was 3-4 Carlos BACCA claiming the match ball with a dipping shot which flew past the stranded Ochoa.

Barnsley were sitting deeper and deeper inviting Brighton to attack and that was to be their downfall as on 70 minutes the host completed a fantastic comeback making it 4-4 after Liam RIDGEWELL powered a header home. The home supporters were urging their team on to find a winner but any hopes were dashed with 10 minutes of the game left when Morgan SCHNEIDERLIN received a red card after a reckless challenge if Steven Pienaar. FINAL SCORE 4-4.

After the game a disappointed Steve Thompson gave his reaction.

"I can't believe i am standing here talking only about a point. I am absolutely devastated it feels like a defeat. It was a case of chalk and cheese performances in each half which against this type of opposition you can't afford.

You have to credit Brighton for the comeback as well they are not top of the league for no reason. They never gave up and perhaps on the basis of that a point is a fair result.

Once again our defensive frailties have reared their head. I have been disappointed with the lack of clean sheets this season and with 2nd half performances like tonight it is easy to see why. We need to tighten up starting now and hopefully that will see us stay in the play offs"
