The Big Match

(Match -16 - WED 18th Dec 2013)

By LONGNOSE

Walsall [4th] v Newcastle [2nd]

Considered by many to be the strongest team outside the top tier, St James Park resembled a mausoleum this weekend after a resounding 7-1 home defeat at the hands of mid table MK Dons. The massacre is the latest in a disappointing run of results which has seen United pick up a measly one point from a possible 12 and accordingly slip into second place behind an inform Swansea city. With respected manager Mark Preston quickly moving to bolster his faltering defence with the signing of German Holger Badstubber theres a sudden uncertainty on Tyneside as pressure mounts on the Geordies to prove their much touted promotion credentials.

If Newcastle fans are feeling slightly despondent of late, its surely a different story down at the Banks stadium as unfashionable Wallsall continued their excellent form with a 5-2 mauling of Watford. Whilst remaining tight lipped, Saddlers boss ''big'' Tony Harman could surely be forgiven for harbouring genuine play-off aspirations, as a fine run of 6 straight league wins has propelled the West Midlanders into an impressive 4th place.

Verdict: Despite their poor form, Newcastle shouldn't be under estimated and in a low scoring game of few chances  retain the necessary quality to edge out their hosts with a narrow 2-1 victory

Prediction 1-2
