Spireites Special: a fan’s perspective

At Stockport County, fringe players Mehmet Ekici and Alberto Paloschi came of age under fire

Arriving at Stockport county stadium, I have to admit that I was a bit anxious and no doubt a bit worried about our chances of picking up 3 points on the day. Our previous result against "Jogo Bonito" County was a heavy 3-0 defeat at home which is never a good sign for the fan base and there were questions as to who would replace the “protector” of the backline Matic, he was a leader on the field and since he cemented his first team spot our defense and goal has been all the more secure.

I wasn’t surprised that Glory Days selected the versatile Denys Garmash who has been one of the most consistent performing midfielders next to Matic, so he was a natural fit. My main interest today was watching of our superstar signing Mehmet Ekici.

The Chesterfield fan base was noticeably dismayed with the departure of Stephen Ireland who had had an instinctual chemistry with Rodallega and provided 4 goals and 5 assists in half a season. My immediate reaction was that it was quite an aberration why this young Turkish player was coming in for our in-form Irish playmaker however when I dug deeper I noticed how supremely talented this Young Turk is and he has shown glimpses of promise today.

If Stephen Ireland was known for his one facet, it would be his passing however Ekici has three. Ekici could have easily been mistaken for a Brazilian player with his comfort with the ball, gliding past players effortlessly and then playing a killer through ball to Alberto Paloschi, who has stepped out of the shadows from Columbian sensation Hugo Rodallega. The free kick duties were given to Ekici from maestro Torbinsky which suggests how highly the manager thinks of the Turkish International, Ekici then repaid Glory Day’s faith by sealing the result with a well taken free kick.

A resounding 4-0, two new heroes for the fans to call their own however its early days and surely a stern test again Burton Albion will test the young kids mettle but signs are indeed promising here in Chesterfield
