The Big Match

(Match -30 - WED 5th FEB 2014)

By SIRMARKHUGHES (Dan Malone)

Liverpool [1st] v Everton [10th]

Liverpool league form : LWWWLD
Everton league form : LDDWWW

Although Liverpool sit top of the table they are in somewhat of a crisis and Everton are on fire after a dreadful start to the league campaign, the Merseyside derbies recently have went three wins to Liverpool and two wins for Everton so it looks like it will prove to be an interesting game.

Chadli is injured for Everton and Song and Carzola are suspended.

Synopsis and prediction:

Although Liverpool are a bit out of sorts they have won three of the last four Merseyside derbies and with Everton missing three key players I think Liverpool will regain their winning ways albeit narrowly.

Prediction 1-0

Sunderland [2nd] v Bolton [15th]

Sunderland have been going great guns and are 4th in the form table. With all the attacking players Sunderland have they are built on a solid foundation of defence and now hold the best defence after Fulham were thrashed recently. They at home , won the last 4 times against Bolton and hold a possible key man in Reus who has been amazing lately.

Bolton have changed manager recently and appointed one of the best around. He has picked up some great results against the title chasers but surely will be disappointed with the lack of consistency shown. Shown by the 5-1 away win at arsenal then to be humbled at home to Exeter 2-0. With all of that aside I do believe Neil has a trick in his bag to try outwit his enermy Razvan but I can see a draw here

Prediction 2-2

Huddersfield [3rd] v Watford [20th]

Huddersfield  form : DDWDDD
Watford league form : DLWDLD

Huddersfield have only lost one of their last thirteen games, although they have drew seven of them, they would be up in the auto promotion slots if they had been able to turn a few of them draws into wins they take on a Watford side who are rooted at the bottom and who have only posted one win in the last nine games.

Cassano missing through injury and Guarin through suspension for Huddersfield.

Guidetti, Morrison & Costa missing through injury for Watford.

Synopsis and prediction :

Huddersfield seem set up not to lose at the minute rather than set up to win and with a slight sign of revival from Watford I can see this ending as a bore draw.

Prediction 0-0

Portsmouth [12th] v Newcastle [8th]

Portsmouth FORM:  LWDWLD
Newcastle FORM:  LWLDLW

Although Portsmouth are in 12th spot they are only five points from a play-off position and six points from 4th. Newcastle were flying high but dipped in form lately but had a fine 5-0 win in their last game. Portsmouth home: W6 D1 L8, Newcastle away: W6 D3 L5
Due to Portsmouth's home form, I would say an away win.

Prediction 0-2

Bournemouth [17th] v Wolves [19th]

Bournemouth and Wolverhampton are 2 teams fighting for there lives battling against relegation. Bournemouth have been fighting and produced a battling display after display with 12 points from 6 games lifting them out of the relegation zone. Both have shown they are very capable teams going forward but cant stop conceding. I think this has draw written all over it

Prediction 1-1

Ipswich [5th] v Barnsley [6th]

Its 5th v 6th at Portman road as Secasiu Mihai's Ipswich face Steve Thompson's Barnsley. With the season entering its final phase the supremely talented Ipswich continued their quiet progress up the table with a hard fought 2-2 draw at mid table Chesterfield on Saturday night. With a Theo Walcott brace securing the point, the resilience of the performance once more confirmed Ipswich as one of the divisions most difficult teams to beat.

If Ipswich demonstrate graft over craft then surely Thompson's Barnsley are very much the opposite. Despite a disappointing 3-2 home defeat to Reading this weekend, the Yorkshireman have been in scintillating form this year amassing a superb 20 points from 10 games. Both teams come to the game injury free but Ipswich will be without the suspended Lars Bender.

Verdict : In what promises to be an exciting evenings entertainment, the organised Ipswich will prove to be too much for the flamboyant Barnsley picking up a vital 3 points with a narrow 2-1 win

Prediction 2-1

Northampton [16th] v Birmingham [9th]

Northampton FORM:  DDWWDL
Birmingham FORM:  LLLWDW

A high-stakes game at Sixfields as two old adversaries face each other as managers for the first time in EC 7046. On paper it looks to be a very even match.

Northampton lie 16th - just 4 points and 2 places above the drop zone.  Their cause will be boosted by the signing of Christian Benteke - who will certainly get a game on Wednesday.

Birmingham (9th) harbour playoff ambitions, but need to make up a 7 point deficit in 9 matches to do so.

It's a must-win match for both sides and a draw looks a very likely outcome. However, if Northampton don't win 9-0 my real prediction is a home win by the odd goal.

Prediction 2-1

Brentford [4th] v Hartlepool [3rd]

Brentford FORM:  WDDWLW
Hartlepool FORM:  WWLLLW

A close encounter of the Division 4 kind.

This should be a cracker of a game with nothing between the teams (both on 48 points). We have Brentford with the 2nd best HOME defence(11) in the league and the 2nd best defence (32)overall. Then we have Hartlepool - the TOP SCORERS  in the league(71) and top AWAY scorers with 38 goals. These stats makes if difficult to predict, will the best defence win or will the top scorers come out on top.
HEAD to HEAD - Brentford won all 3 matches between the sides, however, I think the scoring power of Bent, Molina and Ederson will be the difference on the day

Prediction 1-3
